Pale Lager — The Guide to the World’s Pale Lager

Pale Lager — also called International Lager or Premium Lager — is by far the most consumed beer style in the world. It is the generic term that covers most of the great industrial brands: Heineken, Kronenbourg 1664, Carlsberg, Budweiser, Corona, Asahi, Tsingtao. All descend from the original Pilsner template (Pilsen, 1842) but moved away from it in the 20th century to offer a lighter, more accessible profile reproducible at very large scale. Although often mocked by craft enthusiasts, Pale Lager remains the public face of beer across most countries in the world.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Pale Lager?

A Pale Lager is a bottom-fermented pale beer, derived from the original Pilsner template. It is distinguished by its lighter, more neutral profile and its moderate ABV (4.2–5.5%). It is the generic style that includes almost all the major global brands: Heineken, Kronenbourg, Budweiser, Corona, Asahi.

What is the difference between Pale Lager and Pilsner?

Every Pilsner is a Pale Lager, but not every Pale Lager is a Pilsner. The Pilsner respects the Czech/German tradition: marked noble hop (Saaz), pronounced bitterness (25–45 IBU), biscuit malt. The modern industrial Pale Lager (Heineken, Kronenbourg) is lighter, less bitter (10–20 IBU), sometimes with maize/rice added to lighten the body.

Why does Pale Lager dominate the global market?

Three factors: (1) a neutral profile that appeals to a very broad audience, (2) industrial production reproducible at large scale, (3) very thirst-quenching when served cold. Heineken, AB InBev, Carlsberg and Asahi (the big four) primarily brew this style and account for half of global consumption.

What are the best Pale Lagers in the world?

Among the most respected: Budweiser Budvar (Czech, not to be confused with the American one), Augustiner Helles (Munich, technically Helles but often classified as Pale Lager), Pilsner Urquell (the original). On the industrial side: Heineken, Stella Artois, Asahi Super Dry, Kronenbourg 1664.

How should I serve a Pale Lager?

Very cold: 3–5 °C (colder than other styles, which masks potential flaws). In a standard glass, a stein, or simply from the bottle. No particular ceremony needed — it is a thirst-quenching beer, drunk in moderation but without complication.
